Arkitip - Shepard Fairey - Issue No. 0051

Shepard Fairey
Issue No. 0051

Featuring:
Shepard Fairey

Issue photography by:
Geoff Hargadon
Delphine Ettinger

http://arkitip.com/magazines/0051-shepard-fairey.php

Shepard Fairey is arguably the most famous artist of the Arkitip alumni group, and could quite possibly be the artist most remembered of his generation. We celebrate Shepard's methods not only because they are beautiful and effective but also because he took on the mainstream art establishment and after 20 long years, he seems to be winning.

His recent rise to popularity punctuated by his support of the Obama Presidential campaign has made Shepard Fairey a household name. His iconic portrait of Barack Obama has come to symbolize the historic campaign of the first African American to be elected President and now that image graces the National Portrait Gallery at the Smithsonian. He's an artist who stands by what he believes in and has done more to communicate his causes to the masses than most of his contemporaries, which is admirable on any level. His campaigns have done more to shape the public consciousness than any other artist because you don't have go to a gallery to see his work, its ubiquity is well established.

This issue will be truly historic, as we celebrate 20 Years of Shepard's seminal 'Obey' campaign. Because Shepard has not been a guest of Arkitip magazine since issue edition No. 0003, this reunion collaboration has been long overdue and is a guaranteed to be another groundbreaking Arkitip classic.

A Tribute To..

SER:FDC

AKA Croydon's King of Styles.

There was a time in my youth where I'd buy an all-zones travelcard just to ride the trains and check the tracksides pretty much every weekend. SER ran a graffiti shop in an arcade center in Croydon which is now shut down, along with Clapham's Graphotism store.

I always looked out for a bunch of writers.. Ser was definately up there, every piece was different, he never recycled the same handstyles/fills.. Zonk, Cosa, Fume, Neas, Dem, Memo were all up there too...

But there was one writer I'd always wish I saw everytime I went out, and towards the early 2000's it became rarer to find his new shit, that was Zomby:DDS/FBZ/DTB.. AKA Afro AKA Rate AKA London's King of Characters

You can buy some Zomby prints for your favourite graff lover this christmas at http://www.paintandbeatz.com

Including this one, still unsold, for a staggering £690.00

He also did a limited run of tees for Rare Kind, which are now sadly out of stock. He used to sell these at the stall he used to run with Teach at Portobello Market called 'Street Dreams' where Asbo & I used to go back in our teens to buy the big tins of chrome Molotov burners for £2. The good old days!

A Lady Pink mural could be defined by its distinctive style and saturated colors but as she would be the first to tell you "It has to be BIG".
Born in Ecuador and raised in New York City, Lady Pink was one of the first women doing graffiti in the early eighties. Featured in the legendary 1982 landmark film Wild Style.

Faces in Places

Photobucket

My new favourite hobby is finding faces in things. I dont really take that many photos so I found a group on flickr to satisfy my needs. Like a good piece of graffiti, these little guys make me smile when I see them out and about.
