There was a time in my youth where I'd buy an all-zones travelcard just to ride the trains and check the tracksides pretty much every weekend. SER ran a graffiti shop in an arcade center in Croydon which is now shut down, along with Clapham's Graphotism store.

I always looked out for a bunch of writers.. Ser was definately up there, every piece was different, he never recycled the same handstyles/fills.. Zonk, Cosa, Fume, Neas, Dem, Memo were all up there too...

But there was one writer I'd always wish I saw everytime I went out, and towards the early 2000's it became rarer to find his new shit, that was Zomby:DDS/FBZ/DTB.. AKA Afro AKA Rate AKA London's King of Characters

10 minute documentary from 2003 based around Grime originator Wiley and his Eskimo sound. It was made before the term Grime was widely used.

Directed by Adam Smith, who also directed the video for Wiley's 'Wot Do U Call It?' which uses extra footage not used in the documentary. The part where he films the people in the Queue for Eskimo Dance is big.

I played in Brussels last friday for 'Stainage' @ Recylclart. It was a massive party! The crowd out there were on it from doors opening til the end.. There must have been about 400 people still there at 5am, something that doesn't happen that often in London anymore, unless it's an off-location warehouse party or something. The club was mad. During the day it's a walkway through a train station in central Brussels, during the evening it's a nightclub.. check it out..

passed through to drop my bag off and switched on the TV to find this message, and there was BBC 1 on it, so i smoked some weed the promoter gave me and watched Children In Need for an hour.

I shared the bill with Jahcoozi and DJ Wonder (Roll Deep) on a headline flex, and there were sets from local talent and the promoters, who seem to have built a healthy bass music scene in Brussels (Big Up Kalib & Chantal!)

Wonder smashed it, starting off with DIM - Is You on Boys Noize. Then going into some hyped up dubstep including some Caspa & Rusko tunes and Prodigy - Breathe (NumberNin6 Remix) which went off, before finishing off with some of his own stuff, older bits like What, Face, Asia etc, and one of his new tunes 'Angels' which i think is coming out on his label Wonderland soon.

Jahcoozi were sick. They're a Berlin-based trio formed in 2002 fusing ragga, hip-hop, dubstep and electro amongst other influences.. They have a mad, unique sound. The MC is Sri Lankan/South London Sasha Perera. First time I saw/heard her on stage i thought 'she's a bit like M.I.A', but then I researched her background and found out she was making music about 2 years before M.I.A even started, so the 'copycat' label i'd originally given her was thrown out straight away.

I recorded a video of their performance of 'BLN' which came out on ASound in 2007.

Just heard the new Chipmunk tune featuring Louick Essien and it got me thinking (again) about how much this shit is rinsed now. Apparently Jammer has done an auto-tune song; really hope I don't get to hear it.

People need to get creative with Vocoders again cos they sound sick. Put some soul into it.

The Return of UKG

Underground Garage. Speed Garage. 2Step. Ragage. The Sunday Scene.

It's come a long way from the Paradise Garage, the club that gave it it's name, and it has changed and split into one of the most varied scenes in modern music. A lot of well respected US Garage DJs and producers, most notably Tony Humphries, have rejected the UK's version of Garage, and called it a cop-out from the original New York vibe...

Coming in 1997 with the first ever Garage tune using an MC over the top inna London Style, Scott Garcia & MC Styles with 'It's A London Thing' changed the way this music was perceived in the UK, more importantly London.



A new breed of music began to emerge after this around '98-'99. MCs would replace or chat alongside vocalists. Tunes like DJ Luck & MC Neat's 'A Little Bit of Luck' and the much hated but classic, 'Casualty' sampled 'Bound 4 Da Reload' by Oxide & Neutrino became the new sound of the UK mainstream. Garage was pop music!

From there we've seen it split into 2Step, Breakbeat Garage, 42DaFloor, Grime, Dubstep, Broken Beat (atticablues, B.I.T.A, Seiji, Domu, Co-Op crew etc..) Bassline, UK Funky etc..

Pete Tong and his crew at 'In New Music We Trust' over at the BBC have put together a 30 minute 'Garage Resurgence' documentary, covering the past and present nature of UKG. It features artists like Scott Garcia, Lisa Mafia, MC Neat, Sweet Female Attitude, Skepta, DJ Spoony, Ras Kwame, Benga and a little piece from me.

It covers why the term 'Garage' was thrown out, and where it is now.
